Meeting With Mushrooms, Fungi Workshop And Feast (10:30AM - 4:30PM)
FUNGI ECOLOGY WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS
The Fungal Ecology Workshop Series is running again in autumn 2012. There will be two different workshops, an introductory workshop and one that is a little more advanced.
The fungi, An Introduction to a Curious Kingdom workshop will introduce participants to the diversity and curiosities of the fungi kingdom. This workshop includes an illustrated seminar on the major fungal groups, identification, ecology, natural and cultural history of fungi, and an exciting foray into local forests to search for species of interest. Many fungal specimens from the local area will be displayed, discussed and examined during the workshop.
The second, workshop The Bizarre and the beautiful, A Deeper Exploration of a Curious Kingdom,
will take participants deeper into the fungi kingdom with a closer look at the major characteristics used to identify fungi in the field. We will also discuss some of the evolutionary peculiarities that have resulted in fungi being such a strange and intriguing group. This workshop includes an illustrated seminar, an interactive specimen identification session and a foray into local forests. Participants are encouraged to bring along specimens for the identification session.
It is not necessary to have done the introductory workshop to do the more advanced one, but ideally you'd be familiar with the main features of a fungi fruit body that are used in field identification.
Workshops will run from 10.30 until 16.30. Field forays will go ahead regardless of weather, so be sure to bring wet weather gear if necessary. If you have a magnifier, small compact mirror or fungi field guide bring those too, otherwise there will be plenty available. Morning tea will be provided. You may like to bring along your lunch as the local cafes are pretty busy on weekends and we just take a short lunch break. Workshops cost $70.
For those interested in the culinary aspects of fungi, a third workshop, Meeting with Mushrooms, Fungi Workshop and Feast introduces participants to the diversity and curiosities of the fungi kingdom with a focus on edible species. It includes an interactive and illustrated seminar exploring the natural and cultural history of the major fungal groups, presenting both Australian and European perspectives on fungi as food. The seminar will be followed by a hands-on identification session where participants will learn how to identify fungi. Participants are encouraged to bring along fungal specimens for this session.
A mushroom-inspired lunch will then be prepared and presented by chef, Michael de Jong. After lunch we will take a leisurely stroll around the winery and nearby bushland in search of fungi. Workshop and lunch cost $120
