Ben and Marika Oost and Jana Hatfield have opened The Village Larder, a licensed café and food store at 81 High St, Woodend.

Marika Oost has a wealth of experience culminating in holding the Head Chef position at Karen Martini’s Melbourne Wine Room, St Kilda. She is returning to the kitchen after a four year ‘break’ having had two children in that time.

Jana Hatfield is a qualified chef and food technologist returning to the kitchen after holding senior positions at Kraft Foods Ltd and National Foods Ltd.

Ben Oost is heading up the front of house applying skills learnt as Bar Manager at Public House, Richmond and Sales and Marketing Manager of Campaspe Country House, Woodend.

Having met while working together in the fine dining kitchens of Sheraton Mirage Resort on the Gold Coast more than 15 years ago. Marika Oost and Jana Hatfield have opened The Village Larder, a licensed café and food store at 81High St, Woodend.

Marika and Jana apply their skills and passion to seasonal and local produce to create what they term ‘retro comfort food with a modern approach’. They take ‘retro’ to mean food from any era with dishes such as silverside, baked golden syrup dumplings and lamingtons all making an appearance. The aim is to re-introduce customers to intense enjoyment, delight and thought in their food experience – to bring people back to the feelings they had as children when they stepped into their Grandmother’s kitchen.

Marika and Jana are also calling for people who have an excess of something interesting from their vegetable patch or fruit trees to contact The Village Larder. They will be happy to barter for good quality, organically grown heirloom varieties of herbs, vegetables and fruit. People have already brought in strawberry guavas, mushrooms, green tomatoes, herbs, Jerusalem artichokes and plums.
