Legend award: Alla Wolf-Tasker

IF AUSTRALIA has a finer country-house hotel, we've yet to find it. The boutique resort Alla Wolf-Tasker created on the shores of Lake Daylesford from a bare block is a testament to one fact: she's a force of nature. Add to that being an advocate for Victorian tourism, a champion of local and sustainable produce and, most of all, a fine restaurateur and chef. Lake House is the complete spa-resort package and its beating heart is a beautiful restaurant. Apart from providing peerless hospitality, Wolf-Tasker has mentored staff who can now be found around Australia.

And … in her spare time, Wolf-Tasker has transformed a rundown cottage in Daylesford's Botanic Gardens into a charm-filled cafe, Wombat Hill House, a gourmet haven for dog walkers and strollers.

Daylesford Cider Company & Gourmet Traveller

2009 Green Label Cider was recently made an appearance in Gourmet Traveller. Here's what they had to say...........

"This cider includes proper varieties (including dabinett and Blumer's Norman)from David Stagg's own organically grown farmed trees. It has a lovely soft apple perfume with a touch of spice and floral characters, and while it is round and pleasantly sweetish, there's also true cider bite and grainy texture on the finish. 5.6 percent alcohol, minimal preservatives added."

Lavandula's 20th Lavender Harvest

This summer is Lavandula's 20th lavender harvest. Carol White bought a property at Shepherds Flat (north of Hepburn Springs) because the golden stone buildings reminded her of Europe. They were built
in the 1860s by Italian-speaking Swiss. To match, she planted a Europeangarden, and lavender, a crop that could be managed by a woman and her two sons.
20 years ago she realised her farm would produce enough lavender to sell cut flowers. Tentatively she opened her garden for 6 weekends during the summer, while the lavender was harvested slowly, by hand with sickles. As the crop grew in size Carol needed to learn how to process it, she trialled and developed her line of body products. Now the garden is open daily through the warm months, and the lavender products have forged a reputation for efficacy and good value. The fragrant annual crop is harvested, slowly by hand with a sickle, right through January.
