An atmospheric Italian-style Pasta Cafe and Bar, Lucini's is in the 150 year old Heritage listed building known as the Old Macaroni Factory. Owner, Maria Viola, is fourth-generation of the original Lucini owner. She and her son, Matt, and other family members welcome guests into the historic Lucini home, Australia's oldest Italian building and first macaroni factory. To dine with the family at the Old Macaroni Factory is a unique Italian country experience, and is particularly popular during the annual Swiss Italian Festa held each October.
The unique frescoes that adorn the end pavilions were painted by Giacomo Lucini and tell the story of the Lucini brothers and their connection with Guiseppi Mazzini and the patriots who fought to unite Italy as a Republican country. Pietro Lucini fled Italy after their last battle in 1853 and arrived in Melbourne in 1854. Other decorated panels depict different aspects of their lives and scenes from Lake Maggiore near their home in Intra high in the Italian Alps. Maria takes the one hour, personally conducted tours of the building telling the story of the brothers, the area and macaroni – find out how you get the hole in the middle of the spaghetti. These tours followed by lunch are very popular with the many different groups such as Probus Clubs that visit the site on a regular basis.
Enjoy breads, hearty minestrone, Italian salads, antipasto and traditional pastas including, spaghetti, fettucini, penne and more, matched with your choice of sauce. Lucini’s original sausages are made locally and feature in dishes of Italian recipes, flavoured with herbs from the garden, and are served indoors under the original hand painted frescoes or alfresco in the rustic garden. We offer vegetarian and children’s menus and endeavour to cater for special dietary needs in the casual environment of the very family oriented restaurant. Lucini’s is fully licensed with a good selection of local regional wines to complement the menu. After dinner, guests often join in a sing-a-long or get up and dance.
Visitors can also enjoy a game of Bocce or Chess in the garden, or, as many do, just wander through the rambling garden taking in the wonderful aromas of the herbs, the delights of the various colourful geraniums.
In 2009, the Old Macaroni Factory celebrated its 150th anniversary with a number of special events with plans to repeat the favourites in 2010. Please check the web site for details on groups bookings and the 2010 calendar or contact Maria or (Matt 0404 123 153). Bookings recommended.
