Brendon Eisner and Kate Ulman have been farming organically in Muskvale (just outside Daylesford) in Victoria since moving there in the winter of 2000. six years on from buying "MuskValley Farm” which included an existing organic orchard, they are establishing themselves in the market place and “Daylesford Organics” is becoming well known for growing top quality tree ripened organic apples.
Organic Certification
The entire property has achieved the highest level of organic certification from NASAA, which affords the consumer confidence in a production method based on strict international guidelines.
Philosophy
Brendon and Kate believe that producing food comes with a great deal of responsibility to the consumer, to the environment and to future generations. At Daylesford Organics sustainability is much more than a buzz word; it involves the establishment and implementation of systems that add to and enhance the local environment - from the soil to plants, animals and humans. Lessons are drawn from countless disciplines both old and new including Biodynamics, Permaculture, Biological Farming, Polyface Farming, Albrecht soil science and many more.
Apple Varieties
They are currently concentrating on producing top quality organic apples from their 400 trees with varieties including Granny Smiths, Jonathans, Cox’s Orange Pippin, Gala, Mutzu, Jersey Macs, Abas, Fuji and Red Delicious . They have also recently planted over 40 other varieties that should be bearing fruit within a few years.
Other Produce
Apples form the basis of Daylesford Organics at the moment, however the plans do not stop there. The organic certification covers all fruits and nuts, vegetables and eggs, and with the production of these already underway it shouldn’t be long before we see this small farm achieving its goal of providing fresh quality organic food to the Daylesford region and beyond.
