Holgate Brewhouse, in historic Keatings Hotel at Woodend, handcrafts a range of full malt ales and lagers. Dedicated to the re-creation of classic beer styles - full in flavour and rich in character - this boutique brewery uses natural methods to produce premium quality beer that contains no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives.
Husband and wife team, Paul and Natasha Holgate, conceived their vision after traveling in Europe and the USA. They realised that the cool climate of the Macedon Ranges is an ideal location for a brewhouse that captured the style, flavour and atmosphere of traditional breweries in northern Europe. In 1999 Holgate Brewhouse was born.
The historic Keatings Hotel has been tastefully refurbished and now houses their popular restaurant, cosy bar, award winning microbrewery ans stylish accommodation with views. Here, over a relaxed lunch or dinner of choice regional food, you can acquaint yourself with the art of matching your meal with one of Holgate's fine brews, including limited edition seasonal beers.
Whichever brew you choose, take a moment to appreciate the colour, head and aroma before moving onto that most crucial sense - taste.
To whet your appetite, here are some tasting notes from Holgate Brewhouse:
PILSNER: Classic German-style Lager
Gold Medal - AIBA 2007
Our Pilsner is a true European-style lager – a light straw color and brewed with bucket loads of Czech Saaz hops. This lager is the ultimate session beer, but also offers enjoyment for the beer enthusiast with a clean malt palate and grassy/floral hop aroma and flavour. Crisp and refreshing anytime, Holgate Pilsner matches well with seafood or is a great palate cleanser with rich dishes.
MT MACEDON ALE: Hop-driven golden Pale Ale
Silver Medal – AIBA 2007, 2008
Gold Medal – AIBA 2003
A deep honey colour garnered using Vienna malt gives this ale a warm and broad appeal. Its delicate caramel malt flavour finishes with a balance of piney/resinous hops from the US Pacific Northwest. Easy on the taste buds but offering a complex character, this beer matches well with Mediterranean style dishes
DUNKEL WEIZEN: Unfiltered dark wheat beer
A vibrantly refreshing dark wheat beer, brewed with imported German malt and fermented with a special strain of yeast, our Dunkel Weizen has a dark apricot colour. Lightly hopped and brimming with soft fruit and clove aroma, this beer is an intriguing match for chocolate and berry desserts.
BIG REG LAGER: Vienna/Marzen-style red lager
Premier’s Trophy for Best Victorian Beer – AIBA 2008
Big Reg combines an abundance of Vienna and Munich malts to create a burnished copper coloured lager full of biscuity malt goodness and full-bodied caramel flavours. Big Reg is an ideal pairing for hearty roasts and pork dishes.
ESB: Extra Special Bitter
Silver Medal – AIBA 2007, 2008
Gold Medal – AIBA 2000, 2001, 2006
An amber-coloured English-style ale brewed with crystal and roast malts and an abundance of Goldings and Fuggle hops. Inspired during a trip to the UK, Paul Holgate has created an ale for the beer enthusiast. Try it with full-flavoured foods such as beef, game, and duck.
WHITE ALE: Unfiltered Wheat Beer
A Belgian-style ‘witbier’ brewed with a blend of citrus peel, spices, wheat and barley malts. Its low bitterness makes this beer the ultimate refreshing ale, and also appeals to the non-beer drinker. Our White Ale matches well with seafood dishes and spicy foods.
TEMPTRESS: Chocolate infused ale
Our extreme twist on the classic robust porter is brewed with over 300 kg of malt and finished with a dash of rich Dutch cocoa and whole vanilla beans. Luscious chocolate, coffee, and caramel flavors are balanced by a hint of vanilla and a body of 6% alcohol. A perfect winter warmer or a complement to meat pies and chocolate-based desserts. Be Tempted
HOPINATOR: Double IPA
The Holgate Hopinator takes the original concept of an India Pale Ale to the extreme with a higher gravity to balance an outrageous continuous hopping schedule. Guaranteed to challenge your taste buds and take your breath away, the Hopinator has rich and malty caramel tastes up front, a dense hop aroma, and a bitter hop kick at the back of the palate. Go on, give it a try – if you dare…
DOUBLE TROUBLE: Belgian-style ‘dubbel’ Abbey Ale
Bronze Medal – AIBA 2008
Silver Medal - AIBA 2007
Abundant malt, a unique Belgian ale yeast, and a generous allotment of time to age and mellow result in an unforgettable flavour experience. Raisins, toffee, cognac, rum –all this in a beer! Drink from a brandy snifter to get the full impact. Try with cheese platters or in place of a dessert wine.
