Springhill Farm, a humble family business of passionate bakers who have been creating wholesome finger slices, biscuits, rocky road and baking mixes from traditional, home-style recipes for over two decades. Today, Springhill Farm still keeps it in the family with second-generation operators continuing the tradition of baking tasty, honest treats, with a variety of delicious new–look biscuits and slices just launched.
Founders Jo and Ray Barber have spent years perfecting the right ingredients, flavours and textures to create a range of exceptional products for everyday enjoyment. Each treat is made by hand and all ingredients have been carefully sourced with no compromise on quality and taste. The couple has recently handed over the reigns to daughter Fiona and son-in-law James Whatley and they’ve already put their savvy stamp on things. The new-look Springhill Farm incorporates Fiona’s childhood memories of her life on the original family farm in Victoria’s Bacchus Marsh, with her beloved pet farm animals Basil the dog, Shauna the sheep, Polly the pig, Fred the goat and Doreen the cow now gracing the packaging.
“These memories are an important part of our family and business history. Our recipes haven’t really changed since they were first developed, so they are a genuine country-baked treat. With two young sons of our own now, we’re now more than ever eager to create wholesome, enjoyable products,” says Fiona.
Using the generations of baking nous, Springhill Farm has also created a benchmark range of gluten free products that dispel all myths about sub-standard taste and texture of gluten free foods. They were one of the first companies to respond to the growing need for tasty alternatives for coeliacs and those needing a gluten-free diet for better health. Research by The Coeliac Society has found that 1 in 100 Australians are affected by coeliac disease however 75 per cent of the people with the disorder, more than 150,000 Australians, are undiagnosed. The only treatment for the disease is to follow a strict gluten-free diet. Springhill Farm’s gluten-free products are produced in a dedicated gluten-free kitchen, making them a safe and sought-after offer.
“It all began at a food show 10 years ago when a customer said how much she loved our treats but could no longer eat them due to being diagnosed with coeliac disease. So we made it our mission to create a sweet that she could enjoy. Over the years, we have been spent loads of time researching and testing to try and craft the best gluten free products we could, to deliver a range of options that gluten free consumers could rely on and enjoy. The response has been incredible!” said Fiona.
The range and demand for Springhill Farm has grown, with stockists now across Australia. Despite this, Springhill Farm continues to retain a small business approach, personally dealing with customers, working in the test kitchen and getting on the road to source ingredients. Springhill Farm is proud of their country roots and the business supports a dedicated team of local Ballaratians.
Springhill Farm’s products are just the right size for a mid-morning snack or a pick-me-up in the afternoon. Their new look finger slices and biscuits are available at Hudson’s Coffee, Starbucks stores and independent grocers across Australia.
