Gold on Legs?
Shiraz vines were planted on the Forty Foot vineyard in 1996, and the plantingshave now expanded to include Zinfandel, Pinot Noir & Pinot Gris currently totalling approximately 6 acres of vines.
The whole region flourished in the late 1800s on the back of gold fever. Close to Forty Foot vineyard, one of many mines dug was 40 Foot mine. No doubt many prospectors made their fortune in rich gold strikes however it appears that settlers found agriculture a more reliable way of feeding the family. Many Italians settled in the area and locals tell us that there were vines planted on the current Shiraz block in the early 1900s which no doubt produced some fine ‘Yandoit plonk’ as it was generally known as in the region.
Cool Climate Gold
Forty Foot vineyard is located in Franklinford, far enough North of the Great Divide to ensure warm, dry summers and long autumns [and gratefully not the snow that seems to strike Daylesford most winters]. This weather pattern ripens grapes slowly over the season that develops excellent flavour and colour. The dry conditions minimise mildew pressure that virtually eliminates the need for chemicals.
Our Aims
We aim to produce a range of high quality wine at Forty Foot to ensure a high level of technical quality control with relatively labour intensive practices such as hand pruning, manual canopy management and hand harvesting. Ultimately our destination is to produce really good wine that everybody can enjoy…. But most importantly ensure that the journey is something to remember!
