At "Stoney Rises", in the beautiful countryside at Smeaton near Daylesford, one of the largest commercial flocks of New Zealand's Tukidale sheep graze. A coarse wool breed, the Tukidale breed produces some of the finest carpet wool in the world.
Don Jones has lived on "Stony Rises" since the 1940s. In conjunction with Violet, his late wife, and Robert and Jenny, his children, Don developed the concept of a trout fishing farm. He named it "Tuki" after the Tukidale sheep on the property. In 1985 Tuki Trout Farm opened.
To give them their outstanding flavour, the Rainbow Trout at Tuki are reared in a variety of growing ponds containing pure, fresh water. They are then sold live, as fresh and smoked trout and in trout paté.
Tuki Lamb, raised on "Stoney Rises", is renowned for its wonderful flavour, testimony to the healthy pastures on which the animals graze. At the farm, Tuki Lamb and Tuki Trout products are served in the Stable Gallery Restaurant and are also available for sale.
Today the business is still operated by Don and Robert along with Jan, Robert's wife, and their sons David and Alistair.
Thanks to the vision of Don Jones and the support and hard work of his family, Tuki Trout and Tuki Lamb products are some of the finest foods to grace a dinner table.
